Finding it hard to stay focused during the holidays? It’s a pretty common symptom of this time of year! The good news is that with a little bit of intention and focus you can make the last month of the year count. Why not finish strong? We plan to!

Here are some helpful tips on just how to do this:

  1. Carve out time in the morning before you start your day. Whether you are job hunting or deep in a project at work, it’s important to create time for YOU so that you can take ownership of your day. Map out your calendar so that you can build in focus time, otherwise known as ‘proactive’ tasks. If we just jump into our day we often find we get into reactive mode.

  2. This time a year typically means more sweets, eating out, drinking and socializing. Remember all of these things can take a toll on your energy. Remember to eat healthy when you can, build in reboot time and be intentional about the holiday events you say ‘yes’ to. You will thank yourself later. Studies have shown that your diet often can have effect on your ability to focus so we suggest choosing foods that work FOR you.

  3. Distractions are a common theme this month. It’s okay to say ‘no’. Be mindful of your time. Perhaps giving your friends and family a heads up that you’re putting your phone on airplane mode during certain hours of the day will help eliminate the temptation to be distracted. Turn off all social media and email during periods of the day and do what you need to do to stay focused.

  4. Stay moving. Even though the weather is colder and days are shorter - there are plenty of opportunities to get moving. Find places that offer warm workout facilities. Get your sweat on! It’s important to get those endorphins boosting which ultimately results in better performance at work.

  5. Identify your priorities. Since work tends to wind down towards the end of the month, outline what your top priorities are for the remainder of the month. Manage your day around those. Remember - not everything is urgent, even if it feels that way in the moment. Stick to your priorities and you’ll feel like you’re accomplishing a lot at work.
